Prerequisite: Computer Science Essentials Honors (980) AP Computer Science A introduces students to the foundational principles of computer science through programming, with an emphasis on object-oriented design and problem solving using the Java programming language. Students will learn how to design and implement algorithms, organize and manipulate data using data structures, and analyze potential solutions while also considering the ethical and social implications of computing systems. This course requires strong problem-solving strategies and prior knowledge of algebra, including linear functions and function composition. Throughout the course, students will complete structured, hands-on lab experiences where they design, test, and refine solutions, gaining practical skills in collaborative and individual problem-solving. The AP Computer Science A Exam focuses on a specific subset of Java, allowing students to develop a solid foundation in the language while preparing for advanced study in computer science. NOTE: Students may take this course concurrently with AP Comp Sci Prin (981) or Cybersecurity (983). Grade weighted upon successful completion of course. As a Project Lead The Way (PLTW) course, this class counts as an elective and not as a core science or math course.
